Inter-Act Theatre Society - Co-creating art, Building Community, Empowering Participants
The unveiling of the new Inter-Act Theatre Society identity was timed for a production held in Medicine Hat, Alberta. The “It’s Ability” stage production was a co-created live theatre event in which the fourth wall separating the actors and the audience was removed. The concept of the work challenged conventional notions of disability. Actors provoked the audience to get involved and to make suggestions for the participants, directing the course of the narrative.
I was tasked for all conceptual and formal aspects of the project. A rigorous exploration was made for messaging, visual language, and investigation into poster materials. The final direction that was chosen incorporated custom letterforms composed of conventional graphic symbols illustrating disabilities integrated within the word “Ability”. My role within the project oversaw design, illustration, and production of the poster. Organization of hanging the poster filled out the final stages of the project.
I was interested in producing two versions of the poster in order to maximize the strength of the visual message. Directions were given for the distribution and hanging of the poster throughout neighbourhoods and in the establishments of local businesses. The production sold out, and served as an important step forward for this arts organization.
