













Format Guides Issue 3 - Education, design, and visionary advice
Format, a Toronto-based company delivering customizable digital products for creative makers, produces a host of online tools for its ever widening community of subscribers. Format Guides – one of the company’s latest offerings – is a series of downloadable PDF publications featuring a diverse set of articles on topics such as marketing principles, managing a creative business, and building an online portfolio of work.
I developed a series of directions for the third edition of the Guides, designing the publication from cover to cover. The challenge was to design a consistent visual language throughout the publication while providing enough differentiation for each of the six articles contained within. Imagery was provided by commissioned Format community subscribers, providing contemporary and fresh photographic resources.
Sketching and thumbnail exploration aided in generating visual directions and themes quickly, allowing for the quick production of high fidelity mock-ups with both image and copy content in place. InVision was used as a work critique space, allowing for the discussion of work and the execution of design revisions to be made as efficiently as possible.
