
















Format Guides Issue 4 - A guide for Instagram success
Format, a Toronto-based tech company delivering customizable digital products for creative makers, produces a host of online tools for its ever widening community of subscribers. Format Guides – one of the company’s latest offerings – is a series of downloadable PDF publications featuring a diverse set of articles on topics such as marketing principles, managing a creative business, and building an online portfolio of work.
The design of issue four focussed on Instagram as a marketing tool for creatives. I developed a program emphasizing the stellar photographic resources. Imagery was again provided by Format community subscribers, providing dynamic and fresh photography from which colour palettes for typography and supporting backgrounds were developed. Additional graphic elements were influenced from the Instagram UI, integrated into the page layouts as dividers and tertiary graphic details.
Sketching and thumbnail exploration built upon the previous issue, pushing the structure and relationships between typographic and photographic elements. All charts, device mock-ups, and border details were custom developed, reinforcing the personality of the issue and overall theme. Numerous visual directions and themes were quickly developed, allowing for the production of high fidelity mock-ups with both image and copy content in place. InVision was used as a work critique space, allowing for the discussion of work and the execution of design revisions to be made as efficiently as possible.
