Ultimate Software | Connections 2019 Conference
A program of elements to help promote new design, demonstrate new features, and receive feedback
Connections is an annual three-day conference hosted by Ultimate Software to bring together customers using their HR software. The event hosts guest speakers, conducts workshops, facilitates educational programs, runs guided software tutorials, and offers product demonstrations.
To help gain feedback from customers on a number of visual design changes made to the product, an InVision prototype was designed and implemented. It focused on key screens where illustration was prominently incorporated to gain insight into the use of imagery, colour, and tone of communication.
I worked with the content strategy team to help develop a script for walking customers through the various screens we were interested to gain feedback from. Words were used as prompts and provocations for participants who would submit feedback through Google forms on provided tablets.
A series of feedback cards were also provided, allowing participants to write long-form, introspective responses which were collected.
I thought the physical space in which the demonstrations were being conducted required attention. While I believe it is important to provide a space that is comfortable for participants to be able to reflect deeply upon what they are seeing and being asked to respond to, the venue did not allow for any kind of spatial customization. The attention to spatial detail did, however, provoke discussion around what experience design should fully embrace—even for a software company working in the realm of the virtual.
As a gesture of thanks for everyone who spent the time to walk through the demonstration and offered feedback, Field Notes notebooks were provided as gifts along with sets of stickers and buttons. The illustrative work of Adela Kang was incorporated into the program.
